HYDROTHERAPY
Underwater treadmill
In our practice we use an underwater treadmill from Physiotech®.This device is used in our clinic by almost every four-legged patient because it is so versatile.

But how does this actually work?

After the dog steps dry into the underwater treadmill via the front gangway, the basin is filled with water. The water creates an upward pressure while walking on the treadmill, which reduces the load on the animal's joints. The flowing, warm water also ensures better blood circulation. The resistance of the water against which the dog has to step also provides a more efficient and responsible way to train the muscles.
As a therapist, it is our responsibility to properly adjust the speed, time and resistance (height of the water) to each patient individually so that we can train the dog safely and quickly.

By regularly training on the underwater treadmill, the dog will slowly improve its muscle corset and endurance and show fewer complaints when walking on dry land. It is important to know that training the muscles will often not make the underlying problem disappear, but it can help to reduce the symptoms and thus improve the quality of life.
This device is used for dogs with different types of conditions:

-
for dogs that are paralyzed and need to learn to walk again
-
for dogs that need to strengthen their muscle mass after surgery or a long inactive period
-
for older dogs that are less able to move on their own due to osteoarthritis and other age-related ailments
-
for obese dogs where the water provides more freedom of movement and offers a pain-free way of moving.
-
for athletic or working dogs that need an extra physical challenge
-
…
Because the dog always keeps its paws on the treadmill and therefore does not have to swim, the underwater treadmill is also suitable for dogs with a fear of water. We provide an appropriate period of water habituation until the dog feels comfortable enough to step into deeper water.
This device is suitable for both the smallest dogs such as a Chihuahua and the largest dogs such as a Great Dane. Cats can also exercise on the underwater treadmill, as long as they are not too afraid of water and do not jump out of the pool ;).
